E-Cigarettes Variants

Wednesday, October 26th, 2011

E-cigarettes have one basic rationale to their design: they must look and feel like cigarettes to smokers casual or otherwise. They’re appealing because unlike ordinary cigarettes, they last ten times long. They are also inexpensive and are easily refillable so you’ll not only be giving your lungs relief, but also your wallet.

Here are just some of the many kinds of models or variants of electronic cigarettes, each with their basic advantages and disadvantages:

Mini

Don’t let the name fool you, Minis are known as the classic pen style look of electronic cigarettes. They are a little longer and heavier than normal cigarettes.

Micro

They are perhaps the smallest type of electronic there is on the market. This makes them more versatile and lighter than the usual models. They vary from lengths as short as 50mm to 99mm.

One gripe about this particular model is that while it does serve its purpose with a smaller and thinner package, it loses the “feel” of smoking a cigarette. The thinness of this particular model might strike a chord with certain smokers, but if you aren’t bothered by the look of this model, then it’s a more compact solution to vaporized smoking.

Super Mini

Super minis are the closest size and circumference to a normal cigarette. They look the part which makes them quite popular in comparison to the other models. Most of the products that belong to these variant tend to be designed to look closely to a cigarette as much as possible, making them inconspicuous and less distracting (heck, try smoking with a pen-sized E-cigarette. You will never hear the end of it).

Pen Style

Pen styles aren’t building for compact smoking; rather, they are made for aesthetic. They have essentially the same circumference as normal cigarettes but are longer than  If you’re going for a more classical look when you smoke, this might just be right around your alley.

Cigars/Pipes

The fact that they do not contain any carcinogens is also a big reason why one should switch to electronic cigarettes. Although these types of cigarettes still contain nicotine (this can vary depending on the type of liquid inside it), they are also used by smokers who are trying to quit or break the habit of smoking.

Compact vs. Realism

There are basically two things that differentiate with these models: its size and how close it is to a cigarette in terms of experience and look. Compact designs are lighter and easier to pack in contrast to pipes/cigar or cigarette-sized E-cigarettes. Realistic designs however go for a more authentic experience rather than concern it with whether or not it fits in your duffle bag.

Unfortunately realism overrules compact design. The reason for this is quite obvious: smokers want to emulate the experience of smoking cigarettes so it’s not basically a feel but also the look and weight of holding a cigarette in your hand. This experience is also important for people who want to quite smoking and have an oral fixation; it wont completely rub off the withdrawal process but it does help in easing it up.

An Insight on E-Cigarettes: How They Work

Friday, September 9th, 2011

Electronic cigarettes are better than normal cigarettes in so many ways, but what the verdict is still out there. Although it has been proven by several scientific journals, there had been contrasting reports from FDA and Health Canada limiting or even banning their use due to health concerns.

Breaking Down an E-Cigarette

An electronic cigarette contains three major parts, namely: the cartridge, atomizer and the power supply. Here are the parts according to their usage:

  • Cartridge. This is your mouth piece that also holds the liquids that are to be vaporized for your enjoyment. Since the cartridge holds specialized solutions, there are to ways to refill it: either by screwing a new pre-filled cartridge into the atomizer or by refilling it.
  • Atomizer. This is the part that “heats up” the cigarette, thus vaporizing the liquids in the electronic cigarette. Since this is positioned in between the power supply and the cartridge, it has a filament inside it that is responsible for turning liquid into vapor. However, there is a tendency that the atomizer’s filament wears down after succeeding uses to
  • Power Supply. The power supply is pretty self explanatory. It houses the batteries that are needed to power the atomizer, thus letting it unleash vaporized liquids from the cartridge out the mouth piece.

Appeal with Smokers

E-Cigarettes are appealing to smokers for several obvious reasons. These kinds of cigarettes not only prevent you from harmful carcinogens but it allows you to have better health on top of a more inexpensive way of smoking.

  • It’s cheaper than a cigarette. You can have thousands of dollars per year with these things. Although there are certainly replaceable parts in e-cigarettes, they are far less inexpensive to replace rather than buying cigarette packs.
  • It’s great for people who want to break the habit. Believe it or not, e-cigarettes can actually help in kicking smoking as a habit. Since they simulate the feel of smoking the cigarette, they help ease the withdrawal process in contrast to abstaining or going cold turkey on the whole deal. Nicotine levels can be managed depending on how much concentration is in the solution.
  • Gives you range of flavors. Not only can you manage how much nicotine you consume when using e-cigarettes, but you can also choose from distinct flavors thanks to its vaporization technology. Aside from the feel of tobacco, it has also flavors that simulate the feel of menthol, coffee or even vanilla.

End Notes

What most people don’t know is the potentiality of electronic cigarettes of saving lives thanks to its more harmless approach to smoking. This can also work well for people who have tried many times to quit but can’t manage to do so or are constantly bombarded by relapse issues.

What makes electronic cigarettes appealing is not because they contain can contain nicotine and are smokeless for the most part, but they can help wean you off that bad habit without feeling the kick of reduced amounts of nicotine from your system.

Notes on Smoking and Electric Cigarettes

Monday, July 4th, 2011

Smoking is perhaps one of the worst habits to break. Not only does it make your life a living hell when you’re trying to quit, it’s kicking your body into pieces when you’re one it! Although there are many effective ways to stop smoking, the problem always lies on a former smoker that goes into a relapse. Although you can effectively stop smoking, the temptation is always there.

When it comes to electric cigarettes (e-cigarettes) , the provide one thing for smokers: a safer solution to smoking that hopes to down your nicotine dosage to more “safer” levels are a great way to wean yourself off cigarettes forever.

How E-Cigarettes Work

You can say that electronic cigarettes or e-cigarettes are a smoking simulation. Why? Because that’s basically how this nifty toy works. This electronic device stimulates smoke that hopes to feel as close to the taste of nicotine as possible. Even the design looks exactly like a cigarette so you can trick yourself into having a smoke without having to smoke. Here’s a run-down of its features:

  • Safe from second-hand smoke. These electronic cigarettes only emulate the feeling that you’re actually smoking so there is really no smell or second hand smoke. This not only eliminates the fear of second-hand smoke, but you’ll be able to go through smoking and non-smoking areas with relative ease so it’s essentially a win-win situation.
  • Less expensive. Sure, a single cigarette is still cheap but when you punch the numbers in at the end of the day, you’ll be surprised how much of your wallet it takes away. A pack nowadays costs at around $6 USD in comparison to an electronic cigarette’s refill, which costs only 1/3 of the price.
  • Less Ash. The gripe that most smokers often face is ash and how ash practically leaves an unpleasant smell. You’ll be glad that e-cigarettes don’t have that problem.

Health Benefits

What makes e-cigarettes a healthy alternative to conventional smoking is not only in the fact that they try to capture the essence of actually smoking a cigarette, but also to settle your oral fixation, the proverbial feeling that you have to stuff something in your mouth in order to find a certain level calm. To bring a suitable comparison is that of a nicotine patch. Much like a nicotine patch, it sates the user’s ability to want to smoke but unlike it, it offers the feeling of smoking without having to suck nicotine into your system.

Of course, there are indirect and direct benefits to e-cigarettes that make it a healthy alternative to actually smoking. For one thing, it gives you a breather and healthier set of lungs. You’ll feel better and feel much better about yourself.

As mentioned above, this is not only a healthy alternative, but a cheaper one. But did you know that it technically allows you to have cheaper insurance? Since rates for smokers and non-smokers differentiate, it could put you up for big savings. So you might as well give it a try.

How E-Cigarettes and Oral Fixation: The Psychology of the Smoke

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2011

Smoking has two proverbial addictions attached to it. First is the obvious nicotine addiction and the second is oral fixation. Now to be specific, these two things have different medical implications so for the purpose of this discussion; let’s discuss the psychological view of how smoking is addictive.

E-cigarettes hope to fix this problem by addressing the sensation of smoking on top of keeping smoking’s action of putting something in your mouth. Since smoking is a learned behavior, so is putting in your mouth. Classical conditioning, according to Pavlov, is the automatic or reflexive learning; this basically means that when we do a certain action and it has a certain reward, our body takes the rest over without having to think it through. Thus, smoking becomes habit on that pretense: you smoke because you want to feel calm; you want a little more energy to go through your day. Before you know it you’ll associate it with stress-relief.

Smoking and Learned Behaviors

But before we go into deeper detail on how e-cigarettes fit into the equation, let’s take another pavlovian example to light: John B. Watson. Watson furthered Pavlov’s dog experiment into involving human subjects; in this case, it was Albert, an 11-month old child.

The experiment involved conditioning Albert to have fear of white mice.  In order to elicit this effect, the experiment paired the appearance of the white mouse with that of a loud and fear-inducing noise. During preliminary trials, Albert was exposed to the rat without the noise, fortunately enough; it had no effect on the boy. But when he was exposed to the sound with the appearance of the rat, it caused him to develop an unhealthy fear in white mice.

Now the experiment proved a point. In relation to smoking, people don’t exactly enjoy the smell or the smoke of the cigarette. They are after the experience as much as they are with the energy boost provided with the nicotine. But to be fair, nicotine has an addictive quality so much so that they advertise it on the box. Much like Pavlov’s dog, you’re training your brain to enjoy the feeling of popping a cigarette into your mouth. Once your brain catches hold that it’s a pleasurable experience, everything goes into autopilot every time you’re exposed to cigarettes.

E-Cigarettes and Smoking

Okay, now that we understand how learned behavior works, let’s attribute it to electronic cigarettes. Electronic cigarettes exist for one sole purpose: to create a healthy alternative to smoking by “smoking”. Since E-cigarettes don’t expel smoke or make you suck in nicotine, it basically tries to emulate the “feel” of having to smoking.

Now an e-cigarette knows it has to look the part, so it looks like a cigarette. Although this does not directly solve the dilemma of breaking off the oral fixation, it turns it into an advantage instead. By using your learned behavior, it follows its seemingly automatic routine of popping a cigarette in your mouth. Now the taste may not exactly be close to a regular cigarette, but it sates your oral fixation without having to pump your lung in with more nicotine.
