Advantages of an Electronic Cigarette

November 20th, 2012

There are a lot of smokers who are slowly realizing the ill effects of tobacco on their health, and have started to slow down on such a habit.  However, they cannot deny the urge at times, which is where an electronic cigarette comes in.  This has certainly attracted many people from all over the world, slowly becoming an alternative to actual smoking.  It certainly has earned quite the status among smokers, especially when it means a much healthier way of living, a more careful approach to life and a non-fallacious habit.  People who have tried electronic cigarettes successfully said farewell to traditional tobacco smoking, switching over to this option.  They have nothing but complete praise for it, especially with the fact that they no longer have to worry about the degradation of their health.  Below are some of the advantages that one can find when using electronic cigarettes:

·          It is an effective tool for the cessation of urges in smoking.  This is essentially a device which aims to simulate actual smoking.  However, instead of actually inhaling tar and all other toxins found in tobacco, a person who uses an e-cig will inhale vapor which is blended with a nicotine flavor.  Therefore, it can simulate the actual taste of a real cigarette without putting one’s health at risk in the long run.

·          Since it is an electrical device, you won’t be burning anything and contributing to the pollution of the environment.  In truth, it makes use of electric heat which can vaporize the nicotine flavor.  That, in turn, is composed of propylene glycol.  What this means for people who can’t seem to control their smoking urges is that they are freeing themselves of any chemicals which can lead to poor health.  The amount of nicotine used in the cartridges of these electronic cigarettes is considerably small that even physicians have regarded it as a much healthier alternative to smoking.

·          The great thing about e-cigs is that the cartridges come in a variety of flavors, many of which often have that fruity taste.  Apart from that, one may also try out apple, caramel, coffee, cola, chocolate, orange, vanilla and watermelon flavors.  These provide much diversity for people who wish to smoke but not have that actual tobacco taste to it.

·          Smoking electronic cigarettes is also considered legal in many public places which usually prohibit tobacco smoking.  This includes restaurants, libraries, airports and even clinics.  Of course, there are a few states in the US which are considering the prohibition of even e-cigs, but there’s no doubt that people surrounding an e-cig smoker won’t have to worry about second hand smoke.  That is because they don’t contain tar, produce ash and all other substances which are excreted by tobacco.  Therefore, anyone can enjoy them regardless of wherever they may be at any time.

These are the main advantages of smoking an electronic cigarette.  They are certainly healthy and may even lead smokers to quit tobacco smoking altogether.

E-Cigarettes and Health Concerns

November 9th, 2011

There are a lot of concerns when it comes to E-Cigarettes. Although they do have their uses as alternative and ironically healthier alternatives to conventional smoking, there are certain issues in place that make them a difficult subject for approval or disapproval when it comes to marketing them.

Governments cite that the concern is both in its use and the perceived health risks involved in using it. Unlike tobacco-based products that are taxed and limited its use on adults, E-cigarettes don’t fall into that same category for one simple reason: they do not contain tobacco. This, as they claim, can cause minors to legally smoke below their legal age, making it an embarrassing loophole that can be a tricky thing to patch.

Also another thing that confuses the general media as to the health-based issues regarding electronic cigarettes is the fact that it lacks sufficient studies that disprove or approve of its use amongst smokers. The FDA, WHO and other legitimate health organizations may have already put out studies on E-Cigarettes, but the trouble is that either their research is insubstantial or too diluted to make a definitive stand on it.

Advantages

But don’t fret, the research on whether or not E-cigarettes are a legitimate problem for smokers is still ongoing and it’s stepping the right direction. Since there are very little studies that could prove e-cigarettes that could make them important tools for smokers to live a healthier life without carcinogens, here’s a list of its proven advantages:

  • You can choose to lower your nicotine intake. This is a big one, not only is you free to cut down on your intake, but you are doing so without taking in smoke filled with dangerous and cancer-causing chemicals. You can chose from high to zero nicotine refills; so this makes it an obvious must-have for smokers that have an oral fixation.
  • Healthier and Cheaper. There are nearly 4,000 deadly chemicals found in ordinary cigarettes on top of nicotine while an e-cigarette contains little to no nicotine. Ideally, they can also cut expenses since they only require minimal replacements in terms of parts.
  • You can smoke anywhere. Smoking a electronic cigarettes is not technically smoking since you’re just blowing off vaporized liquid; thus making it safe for people around you. There is no bad smell nor yellowed teeth or fingers that you would commonly attribute to ordinary smoking.

Disadvantages

  • It still contains nicotine. Having nicotine in an electronic cigarette might seem harmless due to its reduced amounts but it also caused an unexpected problem for people who use e-cigarettes with nicotine: you suck in nicotine at a longer rate. Cigarettes naturally burn themselves out in time but with e-cigarettes, you can smoke all you want till the battery runs out, which in this case, is a very long time.
  • A broken E-Cigarette can cause problems.  Diethylene Glycol and other compounds like nitrosamines can cause health problems such as problems with inhalation. If you suspect that your electronic cigarette is busted, don’t take your chances.

E-Cigarettes Variants

October 26th, 2011

E-cigarettes have one basic rationale to their design: they must look and feel like cigarettes to smokers casual or otherwise. They’re appealing because unlike ordinary cigarettes, they last ten times long. They are also inexpensive and are easily refillable so you’ll not only be giving your lungs relief, but also your wallet.

Here are just some of the many kinds of models or variants of electronic cigarettes, each with their basic advantages and disadvantages:

Mini

Don’t let the name fool you, Minis are known as the classic pen style look of electronic cigarettes. They are a little longer and heavier than normal cigarettes.

Micro

They are perhaps the smallest type of electronic there is on the market. This makes them more versatile and lighter than the usual models. They vary from lengths as short as 50mm to 99mm.

One gripe about this particular model is that while it does serve its purpose with a smaller and thinner package, it loses the “feel” of smoking a cigarette. The thinness of this particular model might strike a chord with certain smokers, but if you aren’t bothered by the look of this model, then it’s a more compact solution to vaporized smoking.

Super Mini

Super minis are the closest size and circumference to a normal cigarette. They look the part which makes them quite popular in comparison to the other models. Most of the products that belong to these variant tend to be designed to look closely to a cigarette as much as possible, making them inconspicuous and less distracting (heck, try smoking with a pen-sized E-cigarette. You will never hear the end of it).

Pen Style

Pen styles aren’t building for compact smoking; rather, they are made for aesthetic. They have essentially the same circumference as normal cigarettes but are longer than  If you’re going for a more classical look when you smoke, this might just be right around your alley.

Cigars/Pipes

The fact that they do not contain any carcinogens is also a big reason why one should switch to electronic cigarettes. Although these types of cigarettes still contain nicotine (this can vary depending on the type of liquid inside it), they are also used by smokers who are trying to quit or break the habit of smoking.

Compact vs. Realism

There are basically two things that differentiate with these models: its size and how close it is to a cigarette in terms of experience and look. Compact designs are lighter and easier to pack in contrast to pipes/cigar or cigarette-sized E-cigarettes. Realistic designs however go for a more authentic experience rather than concern it with whether or not it fits in your duffle bag.

Unfortunately realism overrules compact design. The reason for this is quite obvious: smokers want to emulate the experience of smoking cigarettes so it’s not basically a feel but also the look and weight of holding a cigarette in your hand. This experience is also important for people who want to quite smoking and have an oral fixation; it wont completely rub off the withdrawal process but it does help in easing it up.

An Insight on E-Cigarettes: How They Work

September 9th, 2011

Electronic cigarettes are better than normal cigarettes in so many ways, but what the verdict is still out there. Although it has been proven by several scientific journals, there had been contrasting reports from FDA and Health Canada limiting or even banning their use due to health concerns.

Breaking Down an E-Cigarette

An electronic cigarette contains three major parts, namely: the cartridge, atomizer and the power supply. Here are the parts according to their usage:

  • Cartridge. This is your mouth piece that also holds the liquids that are to be vaporized for your enjoyment. Since the cartridge holds specialized solutions, there are to ways to refill it: either by screwing a new pre-filled cartridge into the atomizer or by refilling it.
  • Atomizer. This is the part that “heats up” the cigarette, thus vaporizing the liquids in the electronic cigarette. Since this is positioned in between the power supply and the cartridge, it has a filament inside it that is responsible for turning liquid into vapor. However, there is a tendency that the atomizer’s filament wears down after succeeding uses to
  • Power Supply. The power supply is pretty self explanatory. It houses the batteries that are needed to power the atomizer, thus letting it unleash vaporized liquids from the cartridge out the mouth piece.

Appeal with Smokers

E-Cigarettes are appealing to smokers for several obvious reasons. These kinds of cigarettes not only prevent you from harmful carcinogens but it allows you to have better health on top of a more inexpensive way of smoking.

  • It’s cheaper than a cigarette. You can have thousands of dollars per year with these things. Although there are certainly replaceable parts in e-cigarettes, they are far less inexpensive to replace rather than buying cigarette packs.
  • It’s great for people who want to break the habit. Believe it or not, e-cigarettes can actually help in kicking smoking as a habit. Since they simulate the feel of smoking the cigarette, they help ease the withdrawal process in contrast to abstaining or going cold turkey on the whole deal. Nicotine levels can be managed depending on how much concentration is in the solution.
  • Gives you range of flavors. Not only can you manage how much nicotine you consume when using e-cigarettes, but you can also choose from distinct flavors thanks to its vaporization technology. Aside from the feel of tobacco, it has also flavors that simulate the feel of menthol, coffee or even vanilla.

End Notes

What most people don’t know is the potentiality of electronic cigarettes of saving lives thanks to its more harmless approach to smoking. This can also work well for people who have tried many times to quit but can’t manage to do so or are constantly bombarded by relapse issues.

What makes electronic cigarettes appealing is not because they contain can contain nicotine and are smokeless for the most part, but they can help wean you off that bad habit without feeling the kick of reduced amounts of nicotine from your system.

Electric Cigarettes vs. Real Cigarettes

August 8th, 2011

Smoking is a hard habit to break and it’s a vice that is not truly breakable since at any moment you can definitely relapse and go back to your old ways. Kicking out smoking in itself is a hard and often psychologically scarring process that could take years and a couple of close friends and family, but it takes only one stick to go back.

You might have already heard of electronic cigarettes from different spectrum of advertising as well as word of mouth. The question that lies in its use is a more obvious one: does it work?

Electronic cigarettes, for the most part, look and operate just like cigarettes. You turn it on, suck in specialized aerosol mist. The device in itself uses heat to inhibit vaporization of propylene (or glycerin-based solutions, depending on the brand or model) and thus releases the vapor into its receiver.

A Healthier Alternative

E-Cigarettes are proven to be non-carcinogenic and non flammable on top of non-polluting (a relief for people who worried about second hand smoke).  Although there are still withdrawal symptoms that you can experience due to the change of nicotine intake, it somehow lessens the blow by taking advantage of your oral fixation as a calming mechanism.

  • It looks healthier and feels. Perhaps what makes electronic cigarettes so appealing is that they eliminate all the bad visual aspects about smoking without having to completely dump the stick. For one thing, it emulates the experience of smoking without letting out smoke. There is no ash, no smoke so not only do you get rid of these but you’ll be eliminating yellow fingers and teeth that are caused by conventional smoking.
  • Far less dangerous chemicals. In comparison to a normal cigarette, electronic cigarettes have far less chemical substances that are toxic to your body (there’s about 4,000 listed) that are lumped inside it aside from nicotine.
  • More accessibility. Since E-cigarettes don’t emit dangerous smoke, you’ll have more places to “smoke” without the usual retribution or bother that you would experience when you’re smoking with real cigarettes.

Downsides

Although E-Cigarettes are certainly worthy replacements to real cigarettes, there are precautions in place that you should understand before using one. To be clear, e-cigarettes can still contain increments of nicotine. Although these doses are not as bad as cigarettes, the fact that their electronic is what makes them problematic for certain users.

You see, when you light a cigarette, it’s a timed process. A lit cigarette goes on burning with or without you. Electronic cigarettes however, can go on more lasting periods as long as it battery’s still running. So one should always take note of how long he or she has used the device in order to not get too much of nicotine.

Comparing these two is a no contest. If you want to kick the habit without having to feel too much of the kick, an electronic cigarette might just work for you to wean yourself out of that bad habit.

Notes on Smoking and Electric Cigarettes

July 4th, 2011

Smoking is perhaps one of the worst habits to break. Not only does it make your life a living hell when you’re trying to quit, it’s kicking your body into pieces when you’re one it! Although there are many effective ways to stop smoking, the problem always lies on a former smoker that goes into a relapse. Although you can effectively stop smoking, the temptation is always there.

When it comes to electric cigarettes (e-cigarettes) , the provide one thing for smokers: a safer solution to smoking that hopes to down your nicotine dosage to more “safer” levels are a great way to wean yourself off cigarettes forever.

How E-Cigarettes Work

You can say that electronic cigarettes or e-cigarettes are a smoking simulation. Why? Because that’s basically how this nifty toy works. This electronic device stimulates smoke that hopes to feel as close to the taste of nicotine as possible. Even the design looks exactly like a cigarette so you can trick yourself into having a smoke without having to smoke. Here’s a run-down of its features:

  • Safe from second-hand smoke. These electronic cigarettes only emulate the feeling that you’re actually smoking so there is really no smell or second hand smoke. This not only eliminates the fear of second-hand smoke, but you’ll be able to go through smoking and non-smoking areas with relative ease so it’s essentially a win-win situation.
  • Less expensive. Sure, a single cigarette is still cheap but when you punch the numbers in at the end of the day, you’ll be surprised how much of your wallet it takes away. A pack nowadays costs at around $6 USD in comparison to an electronic cigarette’s refill, which costs only 1/3 of the price.
  • Less Ash. The gripe that most smokers often face is ash and how ash practically leaves an unpleasant smell. You’ll be glad that e-cigarettes don’t have that problem.

Health Benefits

What makes e-cigarettes a healthy alternative to conventional smoking is not only in the fact that they try to capture the essence of actually smoking a cigarette, but also to settle your oral fixation, the proverbial feeling that you have to stuff something in your mouth in order to find a certain level calm. To bring a suitable comparison is that of a nicotine patch. Much like a nicotine patch, it sates the user’s ability to want to smoke but unlike it, it offers the feeling of smoking without having to suck nicotine into your system.

Of course, there are indirect and direct benefits to e-cigarettes that make it a healthy alternative to actually smoking. For one thing, it gives you a breather and healthier set of lungs. You’ll feel better and feel much better about yourself.

As mentioned above, this is not only a healthy alternative, but a cheaper one. But did you know that it technically allows you to have cheaper insurance? Since rates for smokers and non-smokers differentiate, it could put you up for big savings. So you might as well give it a try.

How E-Cigarettes and Oral Fixation: The Psychology of the Smoke

June 22nd, 2011

Smoking has two proverbial addictions attached to it. First is the obvious nicotine addiction and the second is oral fixation. Now to be specific, these two things have different medical implications so for the purpose of this discussion; let’s discuss the psychological view of how smoking is addictive.

E-cigarettes hope to fix this problem by addressing the sensation of smoking on top of keeping smoking’s action of putting something in your mouth. Since smoking is a learned behavior, so is putting in your mouth. Classical conditioning, according to Pavlov, is the automatic or reflexive learning; this basically means that when we do a certain action and it has a certain reward, our body takes the rest over without having to think it through. Thus, smoking becomes habit on that pretense: you smoke because you want to feel calm; you want a little more energy to go through your day. Before you know it you’ll associate it with stress-relief.

Smoking and Learned Behaviors

But before we go into deeper detail on how e-cigarettes fit into the equation, let’s take another pavlovian example to light: John B. Watson. Watson furthered Pavlov’s dog experiment into involving human subjects; in this case, it was Albert, an 11-month old child.

The experiment involved conditioning Albert to have fear of white mice.  In order to elicit this effect, the experiment paired the appearance of the white mouse with that of a loud and fear-inducing noise. During preliminary trials, Albert was exposed to the rat without the noise, fortunately enough; it had no effect on the boy. But when he was exposed to the sound with the appearance of the rat, it caused him to develop an unhealthy fear in white mice.

Now the experiment proved a point. In relation to smoking, people don’t exactly enjoy the smell or the smoke of the cigarette. They are after the experience as much as they are with the energy boost provided with the nicotine. But to be fair, nicotine has an addictive quality so much so that they advertise it on the box. Much like Pavlov’s dog, you’re training your brain to enjoy the feeling of popping a cigarette into your mouth. Once your brain catches hold that it’s a pleasurable experience, everything goes into autopilot every time you’re exposed to cigarettes.

E-Cigarettes and Smoking

Okay, now that we understand how learned behavior works, let’s attribute it to electronic cigarettes. Electronic cigarettes exist for one sole purpose: to create a healthy alternative to smoking by “smoking”. Since E-cigarettes don’t expel smoke or make you suck in nicotine, it basically tries to emulate the “feel” of having to smoking.

Now an e-cigarette knows it has to look the part, so it looks like a cigarette. Although this does not directly solve the dilemma of breaking off the oral fixation, it turns it into an advantage instead. By using your learned behavior, it follows its seemingly automatic routine of popping a cigarette in your mouth. Now the taste may not exactly be close to a regular cigarette, but it sates your oral fixation without having to pump your lung in with more nicotine.
